Cummins on CCTV: Partners with China to Drive Global Energy Transformation
November 14,2024
As a global leader in power technology, Cummins saw vast potential of the Chinese market in the mid-to-late 1970s. In 1975, Cummins became one of the first foreign companies to enter the Chinese market by supplying engines for heavy mining trucks. Over the years, Cummins has embedded itself in the Chinese market, working closely with industry leaders to support clients and drive success.
With China’s rapid economic growth, Cummins seized opportunities to expand its partnerships with local manufacturers, granting licenses to produce diesel engines. Cummins engines quickly became a popular choice across many industries. In the 1990s, Cummins launched joint ventures with major local companies, further solidifying its presence. Today, Cummins operates 37 facilities in China, including 26 manufacturing sites, with investments exceeding $1 billion.
In 2006, Cummins established its East Asia R&D Center in China, the company’s largest technology hub outside the U.S. This center has been instrumental in developing products and standards for China’s commercial vehicle market. Recently, it launched a multi-fuel engine platform, adaptable to diesel, natural gas, hydrogen, and other fuels. Products from this platform are used in China and exported worldwide.
At the recent China International Import Expo (CIIE), Cummins showcased its Accelera hydrogen fuel cell products. Known for their light weight, long range, and fast refueling, these fuel cells have attracted considerable attention and are seen as ideal for long-distance, heavy-duty applications. Cummins’ high-power fuel cells, ranging from 120 to 300 kW, set a Guinness World Record with a single hydrogen refueling, enabling a distance of 2,906 km—demonstrating Cummins’ leadership in hydrogen technology.
From diesel engines to multi-fuel platforms and hydrogen fuel cells, Cummins’ collaboration with China continues to deepen. Cummins has not only witnessed China’s green transformation but also incorporated Chinese innovation into its global network. Going forward, Cummins plans to further strengthen this partnership, promoting green energy and sustainable growth worldwide.
